Devoted to New Zealand Plume

New Zealand Plume are a unique and rare pedigree rough coated guinea pig (cavy) breed that was created in 1976 in Wellington.

We also focus on the satin version, which has a very shiny and polished look to the hair.  We introduced satin in the plumes around the year 2000 and it took years to achieve a good satin plume, we are not one to shy away from a challenge.

When we joined our local club over 30 years ago while we lived in the Wellington region, we decided New Zealand Plume was one of the breeds we wanted to have in our stud and we are so proud that we are still devoted to them after all this time, they are really a part of our family.

With a well raised "mohawk" like ridge about 1cm in height and progressing from the shoulders straight down the body and sharply rising in length to form a high arched rooster tail.  The plume of hair is raised up by two rump rosettes, with more hairs the better.  Avoiding the 'Fan tail', where the hair spreads horizontally.

New Zealand Plume can be in any colour and patterns, which we personally love.  We find them easy to tame and have great characters.  They are usually fun and cheeky but also good on a show board.

Independent Cavy Clubs are the only clubs that continue to recognise NZ-created pedigree breeds, which is why we only exhibit with Independents.  NZ unique breeds should always be supported in their own country.
