Our Unique NZ Guinea Pig Breeds

Our main focus is on the New Zealand Plume and New Zealand Peruvian, which are both unique NZ pedigree breeds.

We do have a very small group of pedigree Saffron as a side project.

Mamaku Cavy Stud was formed in 1992 and named after the street we lived in at the time.  Marilyn and Jen have been devoted to the unique breed New Zealand Plume ever since and the breed is considered a part of our family.  We love their characters, the "Mohawk" ridge, the beautiful rooster tail and the challenge of making the "plume" longer and more luscious.  Mamaku Cavy Stud is for the New Zealand Plume, including the Satin version.

In 2001, daughter Jen created 'Tintola Cavy Stud'.  Tintola means 'Sweetheart' in Norfolk Island's language, which is part of her heritage.

On our site you will find pages for each breed we have in our studs which includes photos, information on them and show results.  We also have a page which is a guide on how to care for guinea pigs, which includes feeding and random guinea pig facts.  We still recommend doing your own research and do what is best for you and your little ones.

The photo above is Mamaku Snowbird, a four-month-old New Zealand Plume taken at The Nationwide 2022 where she achieved Best of Breed, Best of Rough-coat Group and Best Under 5 Months in Show.

Independent NZ Cavy Clubs

We are members of Independent New Zealand Cavy Clubs as they are the only cavy clubs that continue to recognise pedigree breeds created in New Zealand by Kiwi cavy judges.  There is so much history and love for our unique NZ breeds that it was a no-brainer to only be with the Independents who continue to support them.  Our New Zealand breeds should always be exhibited at shows in our own country, and not be excluded and forgotten about.

Please consider joining one of the Independent Cavy Clubs across New Zealand and support our New Zealand breeds.  Some of the breeds have been around since 1976 and some more recent in 2016 and all created by kiwi cavy judges.  Let's keep them going strong!
