Guinea Pig Breeders for Two Rare NZ Pedigree Breeds

Mamaku and Tintola Guinea Pigs are family-run cavy studs for the breed preservation and exhibition of New Zealand Plume and New Zealand Peruvian.

Mamaku Cavy Stud was formed in 1992 by my late mum Marilyn for the family, and she named the stud Mamaku after the street we lived in at the time.  We have been devoted to the unique pedigree breed New Zealand Plume ever since and the breed is a part of our family.  Mamaku Cavy Stud remains exclusively for New Zealand Plume, including the Satin variety.

In 2001, Jen (me) created 'Tintola Cavy Stud' as I wanted my own stud name after years of exhibiting with the family stud.  Tintola means 'Sweetheart' in Norfolk Island's language, which is part of my heritage.  Tintola Cavy Stud focus is for pedigree New Zealand Peruvian.  I focused on this breed during my teenage years but parted ways and came back to the breed about 11 years ago to help save the breed as it was close to extinction.  I also have a small amount of pedigree Shelties.

Together, we are Mamaku and Tintola Guinea Pigs with our efforts on breed preservation which is vital to safeguard our New Zealand rare breeds so that their existence will continue into the future.  Located in Whangarei.

Mamaku and Tintola Guinea Pigs are registered cavy studs with Independent Cavy Clubs.  Both studs are small and are loved and cared for by my family.  We exhibit with Independent Cavy Clubs shows with our local being The Northern Rabbit and Cavy Club.  Independents are patriotic by continuing to recognise and support our New Zealand pedigree breeds.  The only place our unique and rare pedigree cavy breeds are on display is at one of the Independent Cavy Club shows across New Zealand.

You can find out more about the New Zealand Plume and New Zealand Peruvian with photos on our site.

11 years ago, I founded an independent cavy club called 'New Zealand Unique and Rare Guinea Pigs' for the breed preservation and exhibition of New Zealand's rare pedigree Guinea Pig breeds.  The club is dedicated to raising awareness, educating and promoting our unique and rare New Zealand-created cavy breeds.  Highlighting their rare status, why they are rare, celebrating their milestones and what supporters can do to help.  To learn about all five New Zealand created pedigree breeds, please visit New Zealand Unique and Rare Guinea Pigs (cavy club).
